Casa Bianca Pizza Pie - Pasadena

Casa Bianca Pizza Pie - Pasadena
    Los Angeles,
With It’s classic neon “Pizza Pie” sign a massive old thing, glows in a nursery pink and blue. From the outside, it sometimes looks all misty and gloomy, like something evocative and late40’s out of an arty new-wave gangster film. When you step into the foyer, you’re whomped with the smell of garlic and the roar of many, many people being happy. Sam Martorana has apparently been running the place since early in the first Eisenhower administration.

    Home Restaurant

    Home Restaurant
    Los Angeles,
Comfort food is the focus here: meatloaf, vegetable potpie and barbecued-meat sandwiches. The home-away-from-home atmosphere beckons to everyone from locals to on-tour celebrities who want a solid meal. The burgers are quite good and you can even get a rib-eye for under $20 at this homey place. An interior room with a fireplace is charming, but breakfast---anything from old-fashioned oatmeal to eggs with a Southern fried chicken steak---is best enjoyed on the fountain-laden patio beneath the big neon “There’s No Place Like Home” sign. Look around for well-known faces while relishing the kind of foods that Donna Reed and Harriet Nelson were always preparing for their TV families.

The best steakhouse in Downtown is Arnie Morton's, the legendary steakhouse chain with branches as far flung as Hong Kong. You'll often see both movie and sports celebrities here, knocking down the cocktails and trying their best to polish off a porterhouse. Located below street level, the windowless restaurant has that old-fashioned Midwestern steakhouse feel to it: dark mahogany woods, brass fitting, high-backed leather booths, white table linens, and a tuxedoed maitre d' who warmly greets you as he escorts you to your table.

    Original Pantry Cafe

    Original Pantry Cafe
    Los Angeles,
Established in 1924, The Original Pantry has spent eight decades providing its customers with generous portions of traditional American cuisine. The restaurant started with 5 employees in a building at 9th and Figueroa St. It consisted of one room -- a 15-stool counter, a grill and a hot plate. It wasn't long before patrons were forming lines for seats. To offset the wait they were asked to place orders in advance. This practice continues to this day and is largely responsible for our tremendous turnover.

    Philippe the Original

    Philippe the Original
    Los Angeles,
Philippe The Original is one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California. Philippe's was established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, who claimed the distinction of having created the "French Dipped Sandwich." One day in 1918, while making a sandwich, Mathieu inadvertently dropped the sliced french roll into the roasting pan filled with juice still hot from the oven. The patron, a policeman, said he would take the sandwich anyway and returned the next day with some friends asking for more dipped sandwiches. And so was born the "French Dipped Sandwich".

A Sputnik chandelier hangs near the bar at the back, while a golden Buddha head has been carved into one wall and another is covered with coral-colored raw silk.
